Hawaiʻi Island Man Released From Custody Five Months After ICE Arrest

A Hawaiʻi island coffee farm worker is back home after five months in federal custody. Juan Jose Estrada Lopez was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement last August while interviewing for lawful permanent residency. Estrada Lopez came to the continental U.S. from Nicaragua in 2022 without documentation and later moved to Hawaiʻi.

Hawaiʻi Senator Secures $2 Million for Waiʻanae Homeless Village

U.S. Senator Brian Schatz, D-Hawaiʻi, secured $2 million during this year’s appropriations deal for construction of the new Puʻuhonua O Waiʻanae homeless village. The funding will go toward building water, sewer and road infrastructure for the village.
