Gov. Green may nix plan to put more money into state rainy day fund
Governor Josh Green said Tuesday he is strongly inclined to veto a bill that would pump hundreds of millions of extra dollars into the state’s rainy day budget reserve fund and the Employees Retirement System. That is House Bill 40, which would deposit $300 million into the fund. It now has a balance of about $1.5 billion, the largest amount its ever held. Civil Beat.

Concerns rise for low-income families over Legislature’s recent tax cut measure. 
Most Hawaiʻi residents will likely see lower income taxes next year due to a measure recently passed by the state Legislature. However, some advocates are concerned that those changes could also limit tax assistance for those who need it the most. Hawaiʻi Public Radio.

Maui Council holds down property tax rates for local homeowners
Most Maui homeowners will pay the same or less in property taxes starting July 1 under new rates approved unanimously by the Maui County Council. The council decided to lower or hold flat the rates for those who own and live in homes valued at less than $3 million, and offset that mostly by increasing taxes on bed-and-breakfast operations and short-term rentals that are also the owner’s primary residence. Civil Beat. Maui Now.

Former inmate hiring program, supports Waikīkī’s Aloha Ambassadors. 
The Waikīkī Business Improvement District Aloha Ambassador second-­chance program employs low-risk, incarcerated people, and recently released people. Collaborative project aims to restore landscape in plot above Kīhei
A project to protect against erosion, reduce flood risk, mitigate axis deer damage, and improve water quality is being implemented in an 11-acre area mauka of Kīhei. The endeavor will revegetate and stabilize an area on the leeward flank of Haleakalā that has been overgrazed and denuded by axis deer and other feral ungulates.  Maui Now.

Condo and house sales rise on Maui during April, along with prices
The median sales prices for both categories also saw notable increases as single-family homes rose by 16.9%, while condominiums climbed by 8.4%, compared to April 2023. Maui News.

DLNR finalizing investigation into cruise ships reported close to Nā Pali Coast
The state Department of Land and Natural Resources says it’s awaiting a final report following its investigation. On May 1, social media images and videos began circulating of the Royal Caribbean’s over 1,000-foot-long ship, the Celebrity Edge,  anchored in allegedly 43 feet of water near the shoreline. A second Royal Caribbean ship, the Ovation of the Seas, was also sighted close to the coast that same day.  Kauai Now.
