Police make 450 more vehicle stops on Saddle Road
In the wake of the recent traffic fatalities on the Daniel K. Inouye Highway, the Hawaii Police Department continues to conduct high-visibility traffic enforcement and public education initiatives aimed at improving roadway safety.
Between June 8 and June 14, police officers made 450 vehicle stops and identified numerous traffic violations on the highway, including 327 speeding violations, five reckless driving violations, two unsafe passing violations, and 287 other traffic violations.
Enforcement efforts have also resulted in four arrests — two for operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, and two for other offenses including driving without a license, resisting arrest and criminal littering.
The week prior between June 4 and June 7, police issued 411 traffic citations for various offenses, including 269 for speeding.
The DKI Highway, also known as Saddle Road, serves as a vital transportation corridor across Hawaii Island and presents unique driving challenges, according to HPD.
Motorists are reminded to watch their speed and maintain a safe following distance. Speed limits are established to enable drivers to operate vehicles safely under favorable weather conditions. However, motorists should remain alert and be prepared to adjust their driving to accommodate rapidly changing weather.
Before traveling on any roadways, including Daniel K. Inouye Highway, motorists should ensure their vehicle is road-ready by checking tire tread, tire pressure, brakes, fuel levels, lights and windshield wipers.
HPD and the state Department of Transportation are working together to enhance safety on the roadways.
