The first powerful kona low that slammed into Hawaiʻi a week ago and now its sequel this week remind everyone that flooding can happen outside designated high-risk flood zones; that’s why all homeowners and renters are strongly encouraged to consider purchasing and maintaining flood insurance.

Winter storm warning in effect above 12K feet for Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa summits
National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu report the storm is likely to produce heavy snow and strong winds at the summits beginning tonight and lasting through Sunday afternoon; Maunakea Access Road also remains shuttered after receiving extensive damages during the last round of severe weather atop the summit.

32-year-old Steven Erik Michael Lindquist was taken into custody and charged following a March 18 incident in the Keauhou Shopping Center parking lot during which he reportedly threatened someone with a .22-caliber pellet gun.

Brown water advisory issued for southwest shorelines from Ki‘ilae Bay to Ka Lae, or South Point
The advisory was issued Saturday, March 21, and is the result of heavy rain and/or high surf associated with the powerful kona low that slammed into the island last weekend; the public is strongly encouraged to stay out of waters that appear brown or murky, especially after a storm since it could contain higher than normal pollutants.

Department of Transportation reminds the public: Don’t fall for scams
The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation is reminding people not to click on links in unsolicited text messages. Several scam text messages have been making the rounds claiming to be from the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation, or the “Department of Motor Vehicles” regarding unpaid traffic violations and subsequent holds on driver’s licensing.
MEMA evacuation Advisory for Lahaina areas due to vehicle access issues from sinkholes
Evacuation advisories were issued at 10:47 a.m. today, March 22, 2026, for Kelawea Mauka III neighborhoods above the bypass in Lahaina due to potential vehicle inaccessibility from new and worsening roadway sinkholes from kona storm 2, according to Maui Emergency Management Agency. Warnings and advisories are NOT mandatory evacuation orders.
NWS: Kahului is experiencing its wettest month ever
With 10 days left to go, Kahului is already experiencing its wettest month ever, according to the National Weather Service. The NWS Honolulu office released a chart showing the top 10 wettest months all time. So far this month, through March 21, Kahului has already seen 19.92 inches of rain.

Access to the Kahoʻolawe Island Reserve waters is highly restricted because of the continued presence of unexploded ordnance, as well as for the protection of marine resources within the Reserve. However, during two scheduled weekends each month, limited trolling is allowed in Reserve waters deeper than 30 fathoms for vessels permitted by the KIRC.
HECO 9 a.m. update: Power restoration continues on Oʻahu’s North Shore; pocket outages in Hāna, Maui
Hawaiian Electric crews continue to assess circuits that were proactively turned off Friday due to catastrophic flooding in the North Shore area of Oʻahu. On Maui, about 100 customers are without power. Two crews are working in Hāna to address storm-related pocket outages.

Flooding happens: Residents encouraged to consider purchasing flood insurance
Flood insurance is separate from homeowners insurance and generally not required unless a property is in a designated high-risk flood zone; standard flood coverage normally helps cover physical damage caused by rising water, such as damage to a home’s structure and certain essential contents.
Water service shutdown planned this week for portions of Wailuā Homesteads
Kaua‘i County Department of Water crews are expected to install a pressure release valve beginning 9:30 a.m. March 24, weather permitting; a water buffalo providing drinking water will be available for affected customers.
UPDATE: High surf advisory canceled for north-facing shores of Kaua‘i, Ni‘ihau
The advisory was previously set to expire at 6 a.m. Sunday, March 22; however, surf along the northern shorelines of both islands has fallen below advisory thresholds and continues to decline.
