Flood advisory in effect for portions of North, South Hilo and Puna

Radar indicated heavy rainfall of up to 1 inch per hour at 3:20 p.m.; some locations that will experience flooding include Hilo, Hawaiian Paradise Park, Pāpaʻikou, Pepe‘ekeo, Honomū, Hakalau, Mountain View, Nīnole, Kea‘au, Glenwood, Laupāhoehoe, Hawaiian Acres, Orchidland Estates, ʻŌʻōkala, Wainaku in Hilo, Paukaʻa, Kurtistown, Fern Acres, ʻĀinaloa and Hawaiian Beaches.

Kona man allegedly tries to take officer’s gun, threatened his life while being arrested

32-year-old Steven Erik Michael Lindquist was taken into custody and charged following a March 18 incident in the Keauhou Shopping Center parking lot during which he reportedly threatened someone with a .22-caliber pellet gun.

Brown water advisory issued for southwest shorelines from Ki‘ilae Bay to Ka Lae, or South Point

The advisory was issued Saturday, March 21, and is the result of heavy rain and/or high surf associated with the powerful kona low that slammed into the island last weekend; the public is strongly encouraged to stay out of waters that appear brown or murky, especially after a storm since it could contain higher than normal pollutants.

Five people and the furry friend were extricated Friday morning from a rooftop in the Waialua area; the other two people — who wrote ‘SOS’ in the sand — were stranded near Yokohama Bay because the road washed out. Everyone and the dog were taken to safety at U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point in Kapolei, Oʻahu.

Hawaiʻi National Guard activates 200 members to support kona storm flood response

The Hawai‘i National Guard has activated about 200 Soldiers and Airmen to support all counties during the current kona low storm. On Maui, the Guard assisted with medical transport from a Kula medical center after it sustained water damage.

Maui lane closures for the week of March 21 – March 27

 The state Department of Transportation has several road projects planned across the island this week. All projects are weather permitting.

HECO 1:30 p.m. update: Power restoration process now underway on Oʻahu’s North Shore

Hawaiian Electric has started assessing some of the circuits that were proactively turned off due to flooding in the North Shore area of Oʻahu. On Maui, 170 customers remain without power.
