National Weather Service also again pushed back the flash flood warning in effect for Puna and Ka‘ū until 5 p.m. Saturday, March 14; flash flooding is already ongoing or expected to start soon and several roads are closed because of flooding.

HECO 12 p.m. update: 111,000 still without power on Oʻahu, Maui County and Hawaiʻi Island

About 10,000 customers remain out in various areas as crews restored half of affected customers in parts of South and Upcountry Maui this morning. Crews rerouted service to about 4,000 South Maui customers who lost power due to a large sinkhole along S. Kīhei Road around 4:50 a.m. today.

Powerful kona storm brings warning level winds and flash flood risks; Flood Warning extended for Maui until 5 p.m.

A powerful kona storm continues to hit Maui County, forcing widespread road closures from flooding, landslides, downed power lines and other infrastructure issues. The National Weather Service anticipates severe weather will last through Sunday for Maui County.

County of Maui kona storm recap – Saturday, March 14

Maui Fire Department conducted floodwater rescues overnight in South Maui; also last night, dozens of people, who are now at a shelter, were cut off in Hāna due to road washout. Over the last 14 hours, some areas received more than 20 inches of rain (Kula) and wind gusts more than 70 mph (Kaunakakai).

What you need to know about the kona low Saturday on Kaua‘i: About 285,750 gallons of wastewater spills from Waimea plant

The spill happened sometime between Friday night and Saturday morning, March 13-14, because high flows from heavy rains and high infiltration and inflow caused by the powerful kona low that moved over the island during the past few days; emergency water shutdown also in effect for portion of Kuamoʻo Road as crews fix a mainline break.
