The state and county have announced closures for today and Monday due to the severe weather.

As of 3 p.m. today, shelters will be open in North Hilo, Hamakua and Kohala districts. They include: Waimea Community Center, 65-1260 Kawaihae Rd., Waimea; Ikuo Hisaoka Gymnasium, 54-382 Kamehameha Park Rd., Kapaau; Honokaa Sports Complex Gym, 45-541 Lehua St. Honokaa; and Papaaloa Park Community Center, 35-1994 Government Main Rd., Papaaloa.

County parks and solid waste facilities are closed, and all non-essential county services will be closed Monday.

Storm winds continue to be in the forecast at least through Monday evening. Flood risks continue, particularly in windward areas. Strong to locally damaging winds are forecast in Kohala, North Kona and Kaʻu with the potential for gusts higher than 60 mph in some areas.

Potential impacts include hazardous travel conditions and possible power outages.

“We ask residents to avoid all non-essential travel as weather impacts are expected to continue to intensify through (Monday),” Mayor Kimo Alameda said in a statement today. “Crews are working hard to keep roads clear, but if you don’t need to go, stay home.

“Follow our emergency notifications as we will keep the public informed of any updates.”

Have a “go bag” ready in case you must evacuate the area, especially if your home is in an area prone to flooding. It should include food, water, necessary medication, important documents, and other necessities for the members of your household (including pets) if you need to leave in a hurry.

Check in with neighbors, especially those who may have mobility problems, to make sure they have a safe way to evacuate if flooding strikes.

Hele-On has announced that the following bus routes are cancelled today due to severe weather: 1, 2, 75 southbound at 1:45 and 11:10 p.m; 75 northbound at 3:03 and 11:20 p.m., 80 at 11:30 p.m. to Hilo, 90 northbound at 1 p.m., 90 southbound at 5:30 p.m.

Route 90 will start and end in Naalehu.

The following routes will be cancelled on Monday: 1, 2, 10, 12, 60, 75, 76, 80, 90 and 301.

In addition, Gov. Josh Green announced that all state offices, public schools and University of Hawaii campuses are closed on Monday. Affected state employees will receive administrative leave for the day. Essential personnel and emergency response workers should follow guidance from their supervisors.

All state Judiciary courthouses are also closed. Filing deadlines have been extended to Tuesday and all hearings will be rescheduled. Also closed is the Hawaii state Legislature.

“The safety of our residents and visitors is our top priority,” said Green. “We know this storm system could bring conditions that make travel unsafe and threaten property.

Please take this time to secure your home, check on loved ones and heed guidance from emergency officials. Hawaii is strongest when we look out for one another — and that starts with being prepared.”

Both Green and Alameda have signed emergency proclamations which can be extended if conditions warrant.

The county will provide updates as conditions evolve. Residents can receive emergency notifications by signing up for Civil Defense alerts at their website at bit.ly/HCCDAlerts.
