Episode 40 of lava fountaining in Halemaʻumaʻu crater began today at 8:22 a.m. at the summit of Kilauea.

All eruptive activity is confined to Halemaʻumaʻu within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, according to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

Most lava fountaining episodes since Dec. 23, 2024, have continued for a day or less.

HVO said light and variable winds at the summit, measured at less than 5 mph, make it difficult to predict where the eruption plume will travel during this episode.

Scientists expect the plume to remain mostly near the summit area, though changing conditions could affect dispersion.

During past episodes, eruption plumes have risen to 20,000 feet or higher above ground level, driven by lava fountains that reached heights of 1,500 feet or more.
