In a studio tucked away on a quiet street in Waimea, artist Calley O’Neill is working on a 7-foot by 7-foot stained glass mosaic of native Hawaiian kukui and māmane trees. She has completed a variety of other stained glass mosaics, including a pueo (Hawaiian owl), which was sketched out on paper and brought to life like a puzzle, one glass piece at a time. The pueo and tree arch are just two of the elements included in a multimedia art mural that will be installed across eight 12-foot walls that span 300 feet at Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport. $25M in state funding secured for future Keaʻau Benioff Medical Center

The new state funds complement a previous private donation of $25 million from Marc and Lynne Benioff, longtime champions of heath care and quality care for all who live on the Big Island. Construction of Keaʻau Benioff Medical Center is estimated to be completed in 2028.

Police bust who they think is alleged ‘Barnacle’ bandit in possible parking violation scam

Officers through their investigation identified 29-year-old Emmy Cedeno Perez of Kailua-Kona as the alleged party responsible for a possible scam involving a device called “The Barnacle” that is placed on a vehicle windshield and meant to obstruct a driver’s view, temporarily imobilizing the vehicle, until a fine is paid to remove it.
