Phasing Out Maui Short-Term Rentals Would Increase Housing but Hit Economy

A new University of Hawaiʻi Economic Research Organization study found there would be both positive and negative economic impacts if Maui County’s proposal moves forward to phase out nearly half of Maui’s transient vacation rental properties. The proposal seeks to remedy the island’s worsening housing crisis by converting short-term rentals into long-term housing. The affected properties, known as the “Minatoya List,” are in apartment-zoned districts.

Police Search for Second Suspect in Waikīkī Shootout

Honolulu police are searching for a second suspect in a shootout that took place around 9:38 p.m. on Sunday, March 16, at the corner of Kalakaua and Seaside avenues. On Tuesday, police released photos of a suspect wearing a black, long-sleeve hoodie, black pants with white stripes, and black shoes. Anyone with information is asked to contact police.

Egg Prices in Honolulu Continue to Rise, State Report Says

Honolulu egg prices continued to rise in March, according to the latest market analysis report from the Hawaiʻi Department of Agriculture. HDOA said the benchmark price for a dozen large, locally produced eggs rose by 20% to $9.51 during the first quarter of this year, while the price of a dozen U.S. mainland eggs rose by 30% to $9.46.
