Scheduled Hawai‘i Island lane closures for March 23-28
There will be no contraflow set up and no lane closures, unless otherwise permitted, Wednesday, March 26, in observance of Prince Jonah Kūhiō Day. Lane closure schedules can change at any time without notice. All projects are weather permitting.

More than 200 DUI arrests made on Big Island so far in 2025, another 15 last week
That’s a 2.03% increase from 2024, with Hilo leading the pack 79 DUI arrests followed by Kona with 71, Puna with 33, South Kohala with 15 and North Kohala with 2, rounding out the top five. Big Island police say DUI roadblocks will continue islandwide.

The Punaluʻu Water and Sanitation utility has not raised rates in nearly 50 years and said without rate increases it will not be able to continue to provide water and sewer to its customers.

All Foodland stores statewide now part of ‘DA BUX’ Double Up Food Bucks program
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, recipients who get “DA BUX” benefits receive an access card they swipe before their electronic benefits transfer, or EBT, card at checkout to get 50% off qualifying fruits and vegetables grown in Hawaiʻi at participating grocery stores.

Volcano Watch: A collapse at Mauna Loa’s summit in 1868, like Kīlauea’s in 2018?
There seems to be enough evidence of some sort of collapse happening, which remains the only such event in the volcano’s documented history, simultaneously with a dramatic eruption that caused Hawai’i’s largest ever recorded earthquake, a magnitude-7.9 temblor that resulted in a tsunami and landslide in Ka’u that killed more than 100 people and lava flows that inundated 9 square miles.
