Fountains once again reached heights of 600 feet, which were sustained until the north vent in Halemaʻumaʻu Crater quit erupting at 8:26 p.m. March 4. Sustained fountains from the south vent saw heights of 200 to 400 feet throughout the night before decreasing. Just like the best season finale, however, the exciting, roaring eruptive event ended all too soon at 10:37 a.m. March 5, just less than 22 hours after it started.

Update: Wind advisory extended through Thursday morning for much of Big Island

National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu expect east winds to continue at 20 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph, for north, south, southeastern and interior portions of the island, including North and South Kohala as well as parts of Kaʻū and Puna.

Hawai‘i lawmakers propose new $30M annual conservation funding, part of 10-year plan

Hawai‘i’s congressional delegation has introduced legislation aimed at protecting more than 10,000 plant and animal species native to the islands. The Hawai‘i Native Species Conservation and Recovery Act, introduced by US Sens. Brian Schatz and Mazie Hirono and US Reps. Ed Case and Jill Tokuda, would fund conservation and recovery efforts to combat invasive species, habitat loss and climate change impacts.

Hawaiʻi pays 64% above national average for electricity

Kauaʻi Island Utility Cooperative said 60% of its electricity comes from renewables and rates on Kauaʻi range between 33 and 39 cents.
