18 motorists arrested for DUI during week of Feb. 17-23 on Big Island roads
There also have been 7 fatal crashes and 8 fatalities on Big Island roadways since the beginning of 2025, a 40% increase for fatal wrecks and 60% increase for traffic fatalities already in just less than 3 months.

Temporary Welcome Center now open at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park
Located 1.25 miles past the park entrance at Kīlauea Military Camp, the center is a substitute for Kīlauea Visitor Center as it undergoes extensive renovations during the next couple of years.

High surf advisory in effect for west coast of Big Island
Surf of 7 to 10 feet is forecast along west shores from ʻUpolu Point in North Kohala to South Point in Kaʻū. Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense urges beachgoers, swimmers and surfers to heed all advice from ocean safety officials and exercise caution when entering the water in the advisory areas.

Brief but mighty: Episode 11 of Kīlauea eruption ends after nearly 13 hours of intense activity
Lava fountains reached as high as 600 feet for part of the most recent eruptive activity of the ongoing summit eruption of the Big Island volcano, with lava covering between 75% and 80% of the Halemaʻumaʻu Crater floor.

Newest eruptive activity of ongoing eruption of Big Island volcano began just before 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, with lava fountaining to more than 200 feet about 30 minutes later.

Visitor arrivals to Maui up after 2023 wildfires, but down from pre-pandemic levels
Eighteen months after the Aug. 8, 2023, wildfires, there were 202,738 visitors to Maui in January 2025. The number of visitors to Maui in January 2025 was higher than January 2024 (175,005 visitors, +15.8%), but below January 2019 (233,422 visitors, -13.1%).

Officials kick off Kōloa Road Bridge, Kīpū Bridge repair projects with blessing
Work on Kōloa Road Bridge scheduled to begin toward end of next week, with repairs on Kīpū Bridge to start after that project’s completion. Shifting lane closures slated for March 6 through Nov. 1 to accommodate work from Po‘ipū Road to Maluhia Road on Kōloa Road.
