Military pomp and circumstance, a maile lei untying, messages from Hawaii dignitaries and a Hawaiian blessing by Kahu Moses Crabbe marked the unveiling Friday of the Hawaii National Guard Job Challenge Academy at Keaukaha Military Reservation in Hilo.

Officer’s cellphone, other items sought in ‘Sammy’ case

An attorney for the family of a teenage pedestrian struck and killed a year ago by an on-duty Hawaii Police Department officer driving a blue-and-white cruiser was in court Thursday, attempting to obtain the officer’s cellphone and GPS data relating to the fatal incident.

Maui population losses cause millions in lost income

There were more Maui residents leaving after the devastating Maui wildfires in 2023 and fewer moving in — reducing the island’s population by more than 1,000 residents and resulting in an estimated $50 million loss in annual income for Hawaii’s economy.
