Maui population losses cause millions in lost income

There were more Maui residents leaving after the devastating Maui wildfires in 2023 and fewer moving in — reducing the island’s population by more than 1,000 residents and resulting in an estimated $50 million loss in annual income for Hawaii’s economy.

Lawsuit over EPIC system moves ahead

Oral arguments have been scheduled in a lawsuit in which a Milolii homeowner is suing the county, alleging its Electronic Processing and Information Center system, known as EPIC, has trapped him in a permitting catch-22 that will allow him only to demolish his home — which is in a shoreline management area — not to remodel or live in it.

Hawaiian Electric releases fire safety plan

In the wake of the 2023 Lahaina wildfire, Hawaiian Electric released on Monday a three-year fire-safety plan detailing how the company will reduce the chances of electric infrastructure causing a fire in the future.

Point in Time Count to skip unsheltered homeless this year

Hawaii’s Continuums of Care will forgo this year’s unsheltered Point in Time Count — a key measure of homelessness conducted annually since 2012, except in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic — though the sheltered count will proceed as planned.
