Energy Officials Work to ‘Lock In’ Federal Climate Funds Before Trump Takes Office

Hawaiʻi has received nearly $75 million in federal funding since January 2023 to support its climate goals, and another $70 million is in the pipeline. Much of this funding comes from the Inflation Reduction Act and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, but President-elect Donald Trump has promised to rescind unspent money from the Inflation Reduction Act. Mark Glick, Hawaiʻi’s chief energy officer, says the energy office is working to secure these funds for key projects before President-elect Trump takes office in January.

Hawaiʻi Marines First to Get ‘Ship-Killing’ Missile Launcher

Marines on Oʻahu are the first in their service to officially receive a new “ship-killing” missile system they hope will give American forces an edge in the Pacific. They have been testing the Navy/Marine Corps Expeditionary Ship Interdiction System, better known as NMESIS, and are eager to add it to their arsenal.

Environmental Organization Receives $200K Grant Toward New Seed Bank on Lānaʻi

A plan to begin building a seed bank on Lānaʻi will start to take shape this week. The shipping container that will serve as a storage facility has just arrived on the Pineapple Isle. A $200,000 grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation awarded to Terraformation for the yearlong project will help jumpstart the Native Hawaiian seed collection.

Smashed in PO Boxes at Honolulu’s Main Post Office Prompt Concern

The U.S. Postal Service is warning customers take extra precautions to protect their mail after its main post office in Honolulu was hit multiple times by thieves. It’s not your usual smash-and-grab — this time the target was a locked post office box near the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. Federal officials say they are working with local law enforcement to find the culprits. The U.S. Postal Service’s Law Enforcement Division confirmed it is also investigating.

HDS Foundation Gives $113,000 in Scholarships to Prepare the Next Generation of Dental Professionals

Improving access to dental care in Hawaiʻi, especially in rural areas of the neighbor islands, starts by developing a local workforce of dentists and dental hygienists. The HDS Foundation, the state’s only philanthropic organization solely dedicated to improving access to oral health care, promoting oral health education, and reducing oral health diseases, recently awarded a total of $113,000 for scholarships for dental school students and dental hygiene students.
