Proposal regarding hospitals advances

In order to improve health care access across the Big Island, the Hawaii County Planning Department hopes to expand where hospitals and other medical facilities are allowed to be built.

Correction, November 22

A Nov. 18 article stated that construction to remove fuel tanks at Halepohaku on Maunakea could begin by January. In fact, development on the project’s environmental assessment is expected to begin that month. The Tribune-Herald also clarifies that these particular tanks are not known to have ever leaked since their installation. The Tribune-Herald apologizes for the error.

A 10-year extension for a controversial West Hawaii housing development to complete construction has once again been rejected, this time by the Hawaii County Council on Wednesday.

Ag inspectors find live snake in Hilo

The state Department of Agriculture said Wednesday that a live, two-foot-long snake was found Saturday morning in a container of Christmas trees being unloaded at a Hilo store.

Hawaiian Airlines to offer locals-only discounts

Hawaiian Airlines today is introducing a new locals-only program that could reshape the competitive neighbor-­island landscape much in the way that Southwest Airlines’ bodacious long-running $39 one-way fares did after the carrier entered Hawaii’s interisland market.
