UH President Addresses What He Says Are ‘Outright Lies’ Over Athletics Director Firing

University of Hawaiʻi President David Lassner publicly addressed his decision to fire athletics director Craig Angelos Thursday morning, which stunned the community and was met with some backlash. Speaking before the university’s Board of Regents at a public meeting Thursday morning, Lassner said he wanted to “correct for the public record some of the outright lies being promulgated.” While he did not go into specifics, Lassner said he and Angelos met regularly to discuss his performance.

Navy to Start ‘Large-Scale’ Effort to Remove Invasive Coral at Pearl Harbor

The Navy is preparing for a large-scale removal effort of a problematic invasive coral that covers around 80 acres at Pearl Harbor. Unomia stolonifera is a species of “octocoral,” also known as “pulsing coral” or “stoloniferous fire coral,” and was first detected in the harbor in 2020. Its tentacles can be mesmerizing — as they appear to dance and sway in the water, but now it’s threatening Hawaiʻi’s reef ecosystem.

Report: Hawaiʻi Suicide Hotline Calls Increased While Answer Rates Dropped

A new report published in the Journal and the American Medical Association found that calls to the 988 Lifeline increased by 41% after the 2023 Maui wildfires. The study found that call rates rose from 97 to 137 per 100,000 residents, while in-state answer rates dropped from 90.3% to 77.2%, highlighting the need for more local mental health support.

UH Officials Warn of String of Moped Thefts on Campus

If you have a moped on the UH at Mānoa campus, you need to lock it up. That’s the warning from school officials after at least five were stolen in the past month. Two were stolen at designated parking areas near student housing, two near George Hall on upper campus, and one at a parking structure near Kānewai Park. UH says you should use a solid steel lock with a heavy chain that cannot easily be cut or removed.
