Update: Police identify man and woman killed in head-on crash in Volcano

The Volcano residents who died in the early morning Nov. 9 crash on Highway 11 in Volcano were 48-year-old Joanna Graves and 54-year-old David Makizuru.

Couple charged after security guard, man stabbed in fight outside Kona bar

40-year-old Joshua Van Why allegedly stabbed the security guard working the night of Nov. 9 at a bar in the 75-100 block of Sarona Road when he was denied and became angry and the two got into a fight. Van Why’s girlfriend, 29-year-old Rachel Hogan, was also involved in the fightand allegedly stabbed another man who was trying to intervene between the security guard and Van Why.

Veterans honored for military service during program at Maui Veterans Cemetery in Makawao

Veterans were honored for their military service during a Veterans Day program Monday at Maui Veterans Cemetery in Makawao. The ceremony include the presentation of flowers at monuments for the Vietnam War, Korean War, World War I and World War II by members of the US Naval Sea Cadet Corps, Maui Division.

Live Fire Training scheduled for Nov. 18, 21 and 22; Training on Nov. 15 postponed due to Fire Weather Watch

The Maui Fire Department will be conducting live fire training on Nov. 18, 21 and 22 as part of its 40th recruit class. In light of the latest forecast info from the National Weather Service indicating that a Fire Weather Watch will be up for all leeward areas of all islands on Friday; the live fire training planned for this Friday, Nov. 15 has been postponed.

Winners unchanged after 298 Maui voters cure deficiencies on ballots; gap in South Maui Council race narrowed to 97 votes

298 Maui County voters cured deficiencies with their ballot envelopes. Results were updated by the State Office of Elections at 7:10 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2024 and are posted below. The slim margin in the South Maui Council race narrowed from 117 votes after the third printout to 97 votes in the final summary report, with incumbent Tom Cook defeating Kelly Takaya King.

Fledgling public charter school gets more than $1.5M boost from Chan Zuckerberg Kauaʻi Community Fund

Namahana School received $750,00 cash and a set of state-of-the-art mobile facilities valued at $800,000. The gift from Priscilla Chan and her husband Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder and chief executive officer of Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, Threads and WhatsApp, pushes the school’s pre-opening fundraising total to $6 million.
