When they do, they can become disoriented by artificial light, collide with man-made structures or become exhausted and fall, making them vulnerable to automobiles and predators.

Hawai‘i will eliminate the “net income limit” for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, commonly called food stamps, which could extend benefits to 13,000 to 14,000 more households throughout the state by next year.

Hawaiʻi AG applauds state supreme court decision upholding prohibition of short-term vacation rentals on agricultural lands
Attorney General Anne Lopez is applauding the Hawaiʻi Supreme Court’s unanimous decision of Rosehill v. State of Hawaiʻi, Land Use Commission, where the court held that farm dwellings in the agricultural district cannot be used as short-term vacation rentals under Hawaiʻi law.
New milestone reached: USACE completes residential debris removal in Lahaina, commercial properties 64% cleared
The US Army Corps of Engineers, in partnership with federal, state, and local agencies, has completed debris removal from all residential properties devastated by the August 2023 wildfires in Lahaina. The milestone marks the return of 1,390 completed residential properties to the County of Maui. Property owners are now able to apply for building permits as part of the next phase in the rebuilding process.
Council resolution urges prioritized recycled wastewater use for new housing
A lack of fresh water resources has long held back housing development on Maui. And now that there’s a post-disaster housing shortage, the Maui County Council will consider Friday a resolution calling for increased production and expansion of recycled wastewater use to make more potable water available for human consumption.
County work at Wailuku River to begin in October
The County of Maui Department of Public Works will be performing maintenance and repair projects within the Wailuku River Flood Control Channel starting on Oct.1, 2024.

Portion of Niumalu Road in Nāwiliwili closed as road resurfacing continues
Motorists are advised that full closures could be intermittent and are reminded to drive cautiously through the work area; heavy machinery and commercial vehicles will be present. Flaggers will be present to direct traffic.
