New call center fails inspection

The long-delayed opening of the Hawaii County Emergency Call Center has been pushed back once again because the facility on July 29 failed a building inspection.

Summer tourism bump going flat as fall nears

Visitors to Hawaii continued to decline in July, although the downturn was offset by strengthening in arrivals from Hawaii’s core U.S. West market and from Japan, Hawaii’s top international market.

Yoko Watanabe Durham, 86, of Hilo died July 22 at Hilo Benioff Medical Center. Born in Fukuoka, Japan, she was a homemaker, member of Urasenke Hilo Association and Ikenobo Ikebana Association. Visitation 9:30-10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 6, at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Celebration of life at 10:30 a.m.. Casual attire. No flowers or koden (monetary gifts). Survived by daughter, Joan Durham of Lake Tahoe, Calif.; brother, Reizaburo Watanabe of Japan; a grandson. Arrangements by Dodo Mortuary.
