Nothing sweet or soft about Tropical Storm Hone as it continues trek toward Hawai‘i

A tropical storm watch remains in effect for the entire Big Island as Hone is expected to bring increasing wind and the possibility of excessive rain to parts of the island this weekend. The storm was moving west at 16 mph. Its maximum sustained winds increased, now at 50 mph, up from 45 mph earlier this morning.

The newest detail to develop overnight was that once the storm passes by the Big Island, it is forecast to intensify, reaching hurricane strength late Sunday into Monday as it moves south of Kaua‘i and O‘ahu.

The latest forecast track issued at 5 p.m. today by the Central Pacific Hurricane Center in Honolulu shows Tropical Storm Hone’s center still passing south or possibly near the Big Island on Saturday night into Sunday morning as a strong tropical storm.

What are your thoughts on the Public Safety Power Shutoff program?
  • I think it’s a great idea. It will save lives.
  • I think it puts people at risk. Losing power means losing ability to power medical supplies.
  • It’s hard to say. The program hasn’t been engaged at this point.
  • Not sure about the program, but I like the weather camera stations.
  • I don’t know enough about the program to say if it’s helpful or not.
  • There is no simple answer to protecting against wildfires. But I’m open to the program.

Several prep sports cancellations and postponements due to Tropical Storm Hone

Below is a list of events that have been confirmed by the Hawaiʻi High School Athletic Association as cancelled or postponed for this weekend: Girls Volleyball – Haleakalā Waldorf at Lānaʻi (canceled); Football – Maui at Keaʻau (canceled); 8-man Football – Seabury at Hāna (postponed.)

Maui County residents advised to prepare as Tropical Storm Hone approaches

Maui County residents are advised to prepare and monitor developments as Tropical Storm Hone approaches the state. Tropical Storm Hone is expected to pass near or south of the Big Island Saturday night into early Sunday. Strong and gusty easterly winds will continue Sunday into Monday as Hone passes south of the smaller islands. NWS was forecasting that East Maui would be the area most impacted on Maui, beginning Saturday afternoon.
