Aloha Russell,

Last week, our Maui ʻohana came together for Kuhinia Maui, a week of remembrance events marking the one year anniversary of the fires. As we reflected on all that had taken place over the last year, I was humbled and inspired by the community’s spirit, strength, and countless acts of aloha.
All of the gatherings, from the paddle out at Hanaka‘ō‘ō Beach Park to the memorial tributes and luncheons, each event showcased the resilience of Mauiʻs people and our collective hope for her future. I was honored to be able to reflect and share my thoughts at the start of these anniversary events.

We will never forget the 102 angels that watch and guide us from above, and we will continue to search for the two members of our community still missing. We stand with their loved ones, and with our Maui ʻohana who have endured, yet persevered, through so much.

Our people are strong, but they need our help, and I will not stop fighting to help rebuild and restore our communities. From advocating for more disaster relief funding, working with other members of Congress to secure disaster funding, and introducing legislation that directly supports Mauiʻs recovery–I will keep our keiki, kūpuna, and all of our ʻohana in my heart and mind every step of the way.

Mahalo nui,
