Disaster Recovery Community Update Meeting in Lahaina Civic Center gym, July 24

Police presence at Kahului intersection due to ‘suspicious activity’

There is an increased police presence at the corner of Hina and Lono Ave. in Kahului due to a report of suspicious activity. Officers responded to the area at 7:50 a.m. The Maui Police Department’s bomb squad was deployed and remained on scene at last report (10:10 a.m.). Out of precaution, some nearby residences have been evacuated, a police spokesperson told Maui Now.

“It’s important because it is connected to a much larger set of lands that go all the way to the summit (of the West Maui Mountains),” said Scott Fretz, the Maui branch manager of DLNR’s Division of Forestry and Wildlife. “Fires often start at those mauka lands and come down in the direction toward the highway.
