South Hilo patrol officers responded just before 3 p.m. Tuesday to a church in the 500 block of Ponahawai Street after two men working as survey contractors for the county reported being assaulted.

Traffic crash leads to assault during which victim is bitten, punched, struck with hatchet
The victim sustained a laceration to his right forearm from being struck with the hatchet and also sustained numerous abrasions in various areas of his body. The victim reported that Jones slammed his cellphone into the ground, destroying it, and struck numerous areas of his vehicle with the hatchet, causing damages.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported this morning that quake counts from the past 24 hours beneath the caldera and upper East Rift Zone decreased by about 65%.

Big Island community comes together to ‘Celebrate Life!’ during annual Pride Festival
Everywhere you looked Saturday at Mo‘oheau Park and Bandstand in downtown Hilo, the party was hopping. Diversity was on display in several different senses of the word. Friends and family came together to have fun. Smiles and hugs were commonplace and given out freely. There was joy, laughter, happiness, inclusiveness and acceptance. All attributes that lend themselves to celebration.

Nearly one-year after Lahaina wildfires: debris clearance at 88%, more than two dozen permits issued to rebuild
Gov. Josh Green provided an update on the ongoing Maui wildfire recovery as the one year mark nears on Aug. 8, 2023. As of July 5, 2024, the state had cleared all individuals from the non-congregate sheltering (NCS) program at hotels; however, there were still 62 families that were finalizing their arrangements with the federal government to transition into longer-term housing. That’s down from the 3,071 families that were being accommodated in hotels in the aftermath of the wildfires.
