Earthquake activity at Kīlauea decreases after brief uptick from previous day

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported this morning that quake counts from the past 24 hours beneath the caldera and upper East Rift Zone decreased by about 65%.

Inspectors will look at the structural integrity, operational status and maintenance needs of the reinforced concrete pipe that discharges secondary disinfected treated effluent 4,400 feet from the shoreline at Puhi Bay. No impact to shoreline recreation is anticipated.

Dredging at Wailoa became a critical concern for Hawai‘i Island boaters after the Pohoiki boat ramp was surrounded and cut off by lava during the 2018 eruption of Kīlauea volcano.

Tents set up for houseless in Hilo a temporary respite for those living near the canal

At least 20 houseless individuals living near a canal in downtown Hilo are now taking shelter in temporary shade tents on a vacant gravel lot on the southeast side of Ponahawai Street.

Everywhere you looked Saturday at Mo‘oheau Park and Bandstand in downtown Hilo, the party was hopping. Diversity was on display in several different senses of the word. Friends and family came together to have fun. Smiles and hugs were commonplace and given out freely. There was joy, laughter, happiness, inclusiveness and acceptance. Hawaiʻi State FCU announces results of Board of Directors election

Hawaiʻi State Federal Credit Union (Hawaiʻi State FCU) today announced that Brennon Morioka, dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, and Darren Nakao, executive vice president and chief financial officer at UHA Health Insurance, have been elected to serve on its volunteer board of directors. Monica Toguchi Ryan, owner and president of Highway Inn, has been reelected to the board for her third and final term.
