Unrest beneath Kīlauea continues despite pause in short-lived eruption

While there is no active lava on the surface, Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports that levels of unrest remain high as the vent remains open, tremor is still present, glow could still be seen from the fissures overnight and active degassing of SO2 is still occurring from the fissures and blowing downwind.

32-year-old Kamren Forest Adams was originally charged by way of complaint and made his initial appearance May 14 in Kona District Court. Despite objections by Hawai’i County prosecutors, he was released on supervised release.

Hilo man charged with drug, firearms offenses after terrorist threatening incident

22-year-old Daryl C. Sampaga Jr. made his initial appearance Monday in Hilo District Court. His bail was maintained at $390,000 and he was ordered to appear Wednesday for a preliminary hearing.

What is the most important trait of a responsible developer?
  • Paying attention to the ʻāina (land) and being a good steward of it.
  • Being a part of or at least respecting the host culture, including burial sites, traditions and heritage.
  • Protecting endangered plants and animals.
  • Providing employment opportunities that are sustainable and pay well.
  • Fitting the devlopment into the community’s way of life rather than the way of life being lost because of it.
  • Understanding the needs of the community where the development will be located.
  • The ability to actively listen to concerns and compromise when needed.
  • Knowing when to stop a project when they must.
  • All of the above.
