Motorists should plan ahead as a Hawaiian Electric crew will replace a utility pole from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Māmalahoa Highway, north of the Hawai‘i Island Humane Society.

Update: High surf advisory now includes north-facing shores of Big Island
The National Weather Service forecast office in Honolulu also extended the advisory until 6 p.m. Saturday as a series of large swells will continue to move through Hawaiian waters during the weekend and into early next week.

Earthquake shakes east Maui
The magnitude-3.7 temblor rattled the Valley Isle at 8:44 p.m. Thursday, striking 1.2 miles east of Hana at a depth of 6.2 miles below sea level. It was felt in Hāwī, Kapaʻau, Waimea and Honomū on the Big Island.

Inmates 31-year-old Clyde Takeshi Talosaga Loa Jr. and 41-year-old Kawai James Pomroy remain at large. The three escaped Dec. 13 in a car owned by one of the facility’s employees.

Hawaiʻi chief economist: Maui’s labor market generally improving
Maui’s labor market is generally improving, although the county’s post wildfire disaster labor force and employed people have been declining, Chief State Economist Eugene Tian said Wednesday. Warning level surf is expected to generally prevail along north and west shorelines through the weekend, with a brief dip down to advisory levels possible late Saturday and Saturday night. However, the largest swell is expected to arrive late Saturday night into Sunday.
A third opossum has been captured in Honolulu this year
Plant quarantine inspectors with the Hawai‘i Department of Agriculture trapped an opossum overnight at a big-box store in Iwilei. This marks the third opossum that has been captured on Oʻahu this year. The storage container where the opossum was trapped was not used for shipping.
