Some Hawai‘i flights depart amid global tech outage; Hawaiʻi County IT Department acts swiftly to restore any affected systems

Six flights at Kahului Airport on Maui, 6 flights at the Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport on the Big Island, 9 flights at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu and 2 flights at Lῑhu’e Airport on Kaua‘i were impacted overnight, affecting more than 5,000 travelers.

Register now for 26th annual ʻOhana Shoreline Fishing Tournament

Separate divisions are offered for keiki 5 to 12 years old, teens, men, women, kūpuna at least 55 years old and ‘ohana. There also will be an art contest and invasive species division in which all entrants are automatically entered. This year’s tournament is Aug. 16-18.

Hawaiʻi Energy offers cool rebates for summer

The rebate program is available through June 2025 to help lower energy bills when island residents invest in energy-efficient appliances and installations, including air conditioning equipment, whole house fans, pool pumps and more.

EPA orders closure of seven cesspools on Maui and Molokaʻi; Imposes $193K fine

Under the proposed terms, the County of Maui has agreed to close the seven Cesspools by June 30, 2025, and pay a penalty. The County will also review all County owned or operated properties to identify any additional Large Capacity Cesspools and close them within an agreed upon time frame.

Maui motorcyclist fatally injured after attempting to overtake vehicle on Pūlehu Road

A 68-year-old Kīhei man suffered fatal injuries following a motorcycle collision on Pūlehu Road Thursday afternoon. Police say the man was operating a black 2012 Harley-Davidson Switchback motorcycle and was traveling northwest on Pūlehu Road when he attempted to overtake a vehicle on a double solid yellow line. The motorcyclist lost control of the motorcycle upon failing to negotiate a left curve in the roadway and drove into bushes.

Molokaʻi kumu sets sail on deep sea exploration of Central Pacific Ocean aboard Nautilus vessel

A Hawaiian immersion program teacher from Molokaʻi sets sail this week as a Science Communication Fellow in a deep ocean exploration expedition with the Ocean Exploration Trust. Gandharva Mahina Hou Ross, a kumu at Molokaʻi High School’s O Hina I Ka Malama program, joins Ocean Exploration Trust’s (OET) expedition to Jarvis Island, in the US Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument, as part of a team of scientists and explorers.
